Open Eye Gallery: Absence Exhibition

Absence, curated by sociologists Laura Harris and Maike Pötschulat, is a new group exhibition that brings together the photography of seven visual sociologists, alongside finalists from an open call for photography of absences in the Liverpool City Region.

Taking place from 5 June 2026 to 11 July 2026 at Liverpool’s Stable Gallery, St George’s Hall, the show explores absence as both a social reality and a visual language. Across more than 100 photographs, the show investigates absence’s many forms, asking: What does it mean to document what is no longer there, or those who are no longer present? How can we see what society leaves behind, or what never came to be? How can we photograph what resists to be shown?

Maike Pötschulat, one of the exhibition’s curators, said:

Absence is not emptiness. Often, what appears to be absent can have a large footprint in our lives and societies while generating a whole host of activities. In this exhibition, we wanted to focus on the ways in which absence is lived, felt and practised to show what materialises in the gaps and voids that are left by an absence.’

The exhibition includes:

  • Terence Heng’s photography of Bukit Brown Cemetery, a Chinese diaspora graveyard in Singapore, exploring death, one of the most evocative forms of absence. Heng’s work highlights how loss is a fertile ground for collective beliefs and practices.

  • A selection of Setareh Kazemi’s photojournalistic work in Iran, with a focus on the lives of women and migrant communities who rarely find representation. Her work is a reminder of the power of photography to make visible experiences and people that are frequently overlooked.

  • Manal Massalha’s Standing Tall series, which documents Palestinian life and hardship in the Occupied Territories in the West Bank. Here, absence is not a noun but a verb, where a process of violent ‘absenting’ is inflicted on Palestinian communities and lands.

  • An extract of David Schalliol’s Isolated Building Studies, selected from a portfolio of over 700 images. As a broader commentary on urban and social change in Chicago, these images feature stand-alone buildings that are the last, or first, remnants of physical and social neighbourhoods.

  • Makeshift, in which Paweł Starzec revisits sites of the Bosnian War with the muted pastel aesthetic of his photography in stark contrast to the atrocities that happened in the photographed places. Starzec’s work is a critical commentary on the way power manipulates what and who is remembered.

  • Gesche Würfel’s The Absence and Presence of The Berlin Wall, a comprehensive research project that speaks to the traces of the wall in material and psychic terms. We exhibit composite images that were created on Würfel’s cycle along the 160km Berlin Wall Trail.

  • Five polaroids, all of which for unknown reasons shed their owners and now exist alongside the 4000 images in Kyler Zeleny’s Found Polaroid archive. While their original context is forever lost, the displayed polaroids feature flash fiction that was written to reanimate them.

  • Running alongside the exhibition are the submissions from an Open Call for photography of absence in the Liverpool City Region, which generated hundreds of images that highlight how absence is woven into the built and social fabric of the area. Five finalists, whose work is exhibited, are:

  • Daniel Frost

  • Alishah Iqbal

  • Paradise Made

  • Dan Murphy

  • Claire Weetman

TILT special edition

An accompanying special issue of Open Eye Gallery’s magazine, TILT, will launch at the opening of the exhibition. The magazine features specially commissioned texts on the theme of absence and an expanded selection of images from every photographer’s project. Gain new perspectives on the inventive ways Gypsy and Traveller communities create and inhabit their homes. From tents and wagons to bricks and mortar, this display challenges widespread misconceptions and highlights the discrimination these communities continue to face. Led by community voices, it invites you to reflect on the creativity, ingenuity, and resilience involved in making and sustaining these homes.

This display features a new series of commissioned photographs by Romani artist Corrina Eastwood, capturing the original use and adaptation of materials by her family and wider community.

You’ll also see a large-scale drawing or ‘dialectogram’ of a Showman’s yard by Mitch Miller; an artwork by Irish Traveller architect Darren Ward; portraits and poems by Sheldon Chadwick, a seventh-generation Showman; a collaborative project with Charmaine Abdul Karim, founder of 'Pride of Romany', exploring stopping places through a case study of Sound Common; and an artwork by Boater artist and educator Lil Adams, created through her distinctive ‘drawing with stitches’ technique.

Overview

Runcorn New Town's Shopping City - Walking Tour

Runcorn New Town's Shopping City

Runcorn New Town was designated in 1964 with 'Shopping City' developed at its heart in the mid-1970's, described as the largest covered shopping centre in Europe at the time. It was hugely successful to begin with, but the complex has experienced changing fortunes in recent years which reflect wider retail and societal behaviour changes.

The event will consider its future and its relationship with the rest of the New Town area including the innovative 'Runcorn Busway' around which the 'new town' was built. Following presentations, the event will include a guided tour of Shopping City and its setting.

Please meet 15 minutes before the tour is due to start

Liverpool's Streets in the Sky

Discover Liverpool's lost network of “streets in the sky” on a guided walking tour.

Liverpool once had a network of “streets in the sky” - and you can still see it its fading ghosts if you know where to look. From the 1960s, walkways appeared around buildings and over roads, so pedestrians could stride across the city without touching the ground. Those bridges and passages have long vanished, but the city wouldn't look like it does without them.

Journalist Alistair Houghton will take you on an alternative tour of the vanished city in the sky and tell you all about how the spirit of 60s high-rise optimism curdled.

Alistair Houghton is a Liverpool-based journalist who is editor of national news website BusinessLive and a former business editor at the Liverpool Echo

The walk will centre around the commercial district.

Please meet 15 minutes before the tour is due to start.

Baltic Triangle Guided Walking Tour

Explore the future of Liverpool’s most creative neighbourhood on a guided walking tour of the Baltic Triangle with the Baltic Triangle Area CIC. Discover how historic streets and warehouses are being reimagined through innovation, community-led change and inclusive growth. Hear how the area is creating welcoming spaces and supporting a thriving independent culture. From heritage to new ideas, uncover how the Baltic Triangle continues to evolve as a place shaped by people, creativity and possibility.

This tour reflects the #LAF26 theme, ‘Futures’, by exploring how the Baltic Triangle continues to evolve from an industrial district into a creative, sustainable and inclusive neighbourhood. It highlights how heritage buildings can be adapted for new uses, how communities can shape regeneration, and the tensions than can exist between encouraging economic growth and supporting local culture and enterprise.

The tour invites participants to consider how cities change over time, and how the decisions made today will influence Liverpool’s future places, communities and opportunities.

Future Listing - Symposium

Liverpool is home to world renowned architectural heritage and over 2,500 listed buildings. The city’s unique heritage is a strong attribute and a draw for inspiration and learning.

What are the listed buildings of the future?

Following the success of previous Future Listings events during LAF21, LAF22 and LAF24 the symposium will see a format of 6 new presenters each making the case for a currently unlisted building and why it will be listed in the future. The audience will then vote for the one that they think should be listed. Future Listings will encourage interaction between the local authorities, practicing architects and the public regarding one of the regions’ most sensitive challenges. We are delighted to welcome such a diverse range of panellists.

From Paternalism to Participation: Reshaping Port Sunlight

Guided walking tour around Port Sunlight Conservation Area

Port Sunlight’s historic buildings, open landscapes, museums, galleries, event spaces and creative industries make the conservation area an attractive place to live, work, and visit.

The planned worker settlement’s influence on early twentieth century town planning is undeniable. However, Port Sunlight is globally unique. Architectural historian Dr Heather Alcock and Conservation and Maintenance Manager Dr Gareth Dean will lead a walking tour that highlights what sets it apart. They will also reveal the intersections and disconnections between the site’s 100 years of company stewardship and current collaborative site management practices. They will highlight the community’s century of iterative development and how it is being reshaped by and for local people and climate change resilience today.

Aside from specific built heritage policies focused on development management control and the primacy of residential uses, Port Sunlight has been excluded from forward planning in local plan development in Wirral since the 1920s. Yet Port Sunlight and heritage communities like it present opportunities for appropriate development and even transformation. The tour will introduce twenty- first century projects instigated by and for local people, improvements to management practices to support climate change resilience, adaptive reuse projects that are reinvigorating the community and both restrictions and opportunities for Port Sunlight’s future.

Please meet 15 minutes before the tour is due to start at The Port Sunlight Museum

Open Studios will take place on the afternoon of 4 June 2026, 12:00 - 17:00. The event will be a chance for practices to mix, and for participants to have a peek behind the curtain of architecture practices.

The event is open to the public and offers a chance to lower creative defensives and invite people into the environment where the creative process begins.

Open Studios is also a chance for students to interact with practising architects and let them ask questions about the working environment of each studio. This engagement will hopefully assist in the retention of graduating students in the LCR.

This event will be followed by the Architecture Social at 17:30.

Walking Tour: Lower Duke Street

Lower Duke Street

A guided Walk and Talk in Lower Duke Street – the UK’s first Townscape Heritage Initiative

Join Steve Power, former Development Director of the Rope Walks Partnership for a stroll around the Lower Duke Street area.

This Townscape Heritage Initiative which ran from 1998 to 2002 was the first to be declared in the UK and covered approx. 2 hectares of the Lower Duke Street Conservation Area . It represents an 18 th and 19 th century urban form characterised by straight streets and dense building coverage.

It included the regeneration of 18 historic buildings including a large number of Georgian houses, old private three to five-and-a-half storey brick warehouses interspersed with commercial and large residential buildings and some modest terraced workers’ houses.

The project was a £25 million investment funded by THI, ERDF, UK Government Development Agency, and private investment.

One of the key reasons for success was that one development firm was primarily involved. There was therefore a unity of concept and a concentration of expertise. Success has led to further ongoing investment into this area and the Lower Duke Street THI received an award by the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Please meet 15 minutes before the tour is due to start

Grove Street is part of a long-term regeneration project being carried out by The Regenda Group, which will eventually replace 144 low-rise flats with 304 new homes across five phases. The scheme repairs the urban fabric of the area, re-establishing historic street patterns and reinstating street-facing front doors so that the estate will no longer be inward-looking and is reconnected to the city around it. Phase 1, comprising 89 one- and two- bedroom apartments, is nearing completion. Residents who were moved out of the existing properties will be offered new, more energy-efficient homes within this phase, re-establishing the existing community.

Paper Architecture - Children’s Model Making Workshop

Please join Cass Art and Landscape Architect Anastasiya Yurkevich for a free children’s model-making workshop, titled Paper Architecture.

Children will create from a milk bottle-shaped structure inspired by a traditional terraced house. One side will become the façade, while the other side will be cut away to reveal a simple multi-level interior — similar to a dollhouse.

On the exterior, children can draw and cut out windows and doors, decorate façades, and add details such as chimneys, smoke, animals, or plants. Inside, they can create a simple cardboard interior or illustrate furniture and rooms directly onto the surfaces. Each child will also invent a character who might live in the house, bringing the space to life through storytelling and imagination.

Older children can focus on adding intricate details and personalised elements, while younger children can approach the activity more freely through colour, shape, and expressive mark-making.

A key part of the workshop is collaboration between children and their parents or carers

All materials will be provided by Cass Art.

Event is free. No prior booking required - just turn up.

For further venue details, and accessibility, please visit the Cass Art Website.
